Florida without Borders: Women at the Intersections of the Local and Global
A Conference Hosted by the Florida Consortium for Women’s Studies

The Florida Consortium for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies is a state-wide coalition of Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Departments, Programs, and Centers committed to advancing the discipline through feminist teaching, research, and activism.
Conference Theme:
The theme of the second annual conference is to demonstrate how Women’s Studies’ scholarship, pedagogy, and activism can address the needs of women. Highlighting the problems facing women globally, the conference will feature globalization, activism across borders, gender and human rights, women and poverty, current immigration issues, economic value of immigrant labor, human trafficking, and internationalizing Women’s Studies and Women’s Studies’ study abroad programs. In addition, the aim is to build a State-wide intellectual community in Women’s Studies and we invite papers on the feminist visual and performing arts, humanities, cultural studies, family, health, education, and new directions in scholarship. The Conference is open to presenters from around the nation and the world, and papers authored or co-authored by students are encouraged.
"Feminist Perspectives, Global Ethics, and the Need for Moral Language Translation Skills"
Keynote Speaker: Rose Marie Tong is Distinguished Professor of Health Care Ethics and Director of the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Tong is the author or editor of fifteen books including Women, Sex, and the Law; Feminist Thought: A Comprehensive Introduction; Feminine and Feminist Ethics; Controlling Our Reproductive Destiny (with Lawrence Kaplan); Feminist Approaches to Bioethics; Globalizing Feminist Bioethics (with Aida Santos and Gwen Anderson); and Linking Visions: Feminist Bioethics, Human Rights, and the Developing World (with Anne Donchin and Susan Dodds).
Submission Guidelines:
The deadline for submissions is Friday, December 1, 2006. All proposals should be submitted electronically. Proposals should not exceed 500 words per individual paper and must include an abstract that is no longer than 50 words. Papers, Panels, Symposia, and Workshops are welcome addressing any aspect of the theme of the conference.
