Announcements
1)The next FAP-FL Meeting will take place at the University of Florida,in Gainesville, on Saturday April 21, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. It will be hosted by Dr. Melissa Hyde. The location was chosen so TFAP-FL colleagues in the North and West of the state can more easily attend. To date, attendance has been almost entirely from South Florida-based colleagues. Gail noted that various conflicts -- Art Basel, holidays, etc. have made it difficult to schedule a meeting sooner. Info is available on B&Bs in Gainesville, etc. for attendees coming from the south. see NEXT MEETING INFORMATION
2)TFAP-FL may plan group trips to New York City and Los Angeles to see the two feminist shows opening in March See FEMINIST SHOWS OPENING IN 2007. We're looking for a travel agent who can help make arrangements/get us group rates. Bernice Steinbaum said she knows a travel agent who might be able to organize trips. Gail also knows one.
3)Deadline for Mary Jo to receive abstracts of proposed talks for the TFAP-FL panel she is organizing for the Florida Consortium for Women's Studies conference in February is November 1st. Jillian Hernandez and Lamia Endara both expressed interest in submitting proposals. See CALL FOR PAPERS
Report from the Exhibitions Working Group
Francie Bishop Good announced that Bonnie Clearwater, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami is working on getting the LA show. Francie also announced the opening,in the spring, of The Girls' Club, an alternative space located next to her studio. Francie said she is looking for other connections on the other feminist shows.
Bernice Steinbaum announced that she had lunch with Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art, Ft. Lauderdale. He proposed having a show of women photographers and their mentors, perhaps 10 or 20 who are actively working in Florida. Concern was expressed about the proposal because it seemed not to include the works of the women photographers in the show, but only their mentors. Francie Bishop Good has spoken to Mr. Lippman since our meeting, and he has agreed to show the work of the photographers along with their mentors; however their mentors could be men, their inspirations could be a novel, or something else; he is open.
Please E-mail bernicefla@bellsouth.net and send her names of women photographers in the state of Florida, their mentors, etc.
Discussion:
Gail Shepherd offered to contact the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach. She also suggested a meeting with the Boca Museum of Art and maybe FAU gallery for the smallest of the 3 shows.
Bernice Steinbaum suggested that the Harn Museum at the University of Florida would be an excellent museum for either of the larger shows.
Lamia Endara noted that The Lowe Museum at the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum Show has scheduled a traveling exhibition entitled "Women Only! In Their Studios" to open at the Lowe in 2008.
Miami Art Center director Ella Cisneros is particularly interested in international feminist work. Susan Vodicka will speak to her about the Brooklyn "Global Feminisms" exhibition. Brooke Minto, who is on TFAP-FL contact list is the MAC arts educator.
Other Museums/Galleries suggested for contact included: The Bass and the FIU Frost Museum.
Current exhibition working group members are: Francie Bishop Good, Bernice Steinbaum, Denise Delgado, Mary Jo Aagerstoun, Madeline Denaro and Sheila Elias.
During the lunch break, Jillian Hernandez gave a presentation on her Women On the Rise Program. She is working with juvenile detention centers and other underserved female populations to introduce them to women artists. Jillian conducts two-hour wokshops each featuring a different woman artist. The program currently is serving 700 girls. The New York Times has featured the program in a recent article. See USING ART TO BUILD PRIDEThis is a program that could be replicated in other areas. In March,2005, the Guerilla Girls did a workshop for Women on the Rise.
Jillian wants to encourage local professors to teach their students about this program and generate interns to take over, as she will be leaving to attend graduate school. She has made an initial contact with professor Carol Damian at Florida International University. Jillian has also contacted Suzanna Rose, Director of the Women's Studies Center at FIU about coordinating spring semester events/courses related to FAP, she is awaiting word and will arrange a formal meeting.
Jillian lectured on the Women on the Rise project in August in Coconut Grove see FEMINIST ART THE SUBJECT OF HANDS-ON EVENT. Art works by the young women in the project will be exhibited in the Miami Airport during Art Basel in November.
Report from the Publicity/PR Working Group
Gail Shepherd reported that at present the committee has been concentrating on 5 projects.
1) To compile a database with contacts for all friendly media in the state of Florida. She asked members to email her any contacts they have or know personally.
2)Mary circulated the packet Rutgers has provided to Regional TFAP coordinators which could serve as as a model, but all agreed we should tweak it considerably. Mary is working on creating a PR packet see PR PACKET ENCLOSURES that will give FAP-FL its own identity. She has also presented ideas for a logo. Go to SeeLogos, and then provide feedback on which one you like best.
3)To develop a web site and figure out how to fund it.
4)To analyze the demographics of targets for TFAP-FL's marketing and publicity campaign. Mary noted that she's working on finding out what the demographics of potential target markets are.
Discussion:
Susan Vodicka, who joined the Publicity/PR working group after the meeting, suggested that it would be most effective to put all PR in electronic format, so it can be easily emailed, which would save money on postage, and so that we can pick and choose which elements to send out to media. She also suggested that snazzy postcards could be created for specific announcements (of events, etc.)
The group agreed that non-traditional elements could be used for publicity in the guerrilla tradition -- stickers, buttons, posters, bumper stickers, etc.
Jillian Hernandez suggested that having a calendar of events up on a web site or wiki would help support our mission.
There also was a suggestion to contact the Broward Cultural Council to see if they would partner with us.
PR/Publicity Group NEEDS: More working group members, businesses willing to donate printing services, funding sources and ideas for funding.
Current members of the Publicity/PR Working group are: Gail Shepherd, Mary Dwyer and Susan Vodicka.
Report from the Outreach and Resources Working Groups
Jillian Hernandez handed out a report detailing what has been discovered about which courses related to feminist art are planned or are being taught in several universitiessee OUTREACH AND RESOURCES WORKING GROUP REPORT. She requested that all TFAP-FL members of the Resources Group email her names of art history, studio art and women's studies professors in Florida colleges and universities who might be open to teaching/networking/assisting in TFAP-FL's mission.
Jillian suggested that TFAP-FL could partner with the Women's Fund as they are looking for speakers.
Discussion:
The group suggested several projects to raise media awareness of gallery representation of working women artists, some of which might be spearheaded by students or as class projects:
The students could compile the following information which could then be used in TFAP-FL's marketing and public awareness campaign.
1)how many women artists are represented in the major Florida galleries? percentages? Most gallery web sites list rosters of their artists.
2)What is the percentage of women represented in major shows?
3)Develop a map or calendar showing "Where the Girls Aren't" This suggestion came up when the group began to discuss the recent article by Jerry Salts in the Village Voice. Saltz's article, the second in two years, lamented the dearth of art by women in New York galleries and museums as the Fall cultural season began.View Jerry Saltz' VILLAGE VOICE ARTICLE http://www.villagevoice.com/art/0639,saltz,74535,13.html
Bernice Steinbaum noted that the great contribution of the Guerilla Girls was to give people statistics about representation of women in gallery and museum shows, and that TFAP could do the same thing. These facts/factoids/statistics/questions/etc could be sent out on a postcard to our entire mailing list, or printed up on stickers or flyers and distributed. The group also discussed how activist we want to be. All agreed: Very. "Our role is to be activists, and to educate about activism in the arts."
- It was noted that The Miami Herald recently published a list of all the art galleries in 3 counties in South Florida, which would be a starting point for research.
*Discussion on Public Art Projects which would call on local artists to create something to raise awareness about TFAP-FL and women's representation in Florida galleries and museums. Jillian said Sophie Brion of the Women's Fund is interested in this. Sophie could not attend the meeting but Jillian will touch base with her and gauge how they should proceed.
*Helen Kohen asked if anything could be done in conjunction with Women's History Month in March, 2007.
*There was a suggestion that the Speakers Bureau might give a presentation to the Women Lawyers' groups in Florida, who are very active and energetic and could be encouraged to participate in TFAP.
*Jillian reiterated that she has a great relationship with the Women's Fund and that they are an excellent potential resource.
Current members of the Resources Working Group are: Lise Drost, Jillian Hernandez, Mira Lehr, Debra Murphy, Ryan Musgrave, Rebecca Brienen, Karen Bearor.
Current members of the Outreach Working Group are: Gail Shepherd, Meredith Beattie, Amy Broderick, Lise Drost, Britt Miazgowicz, Jillian Hernandez, Nina Johnson, Carol Damian, Sophie Brion, Bernadine Heller-Greenman.
Report on Networking
Lamia Endara reported that she will propose that this working group focus on five projects:
1)To compile a list of Florida women photographers for Bernice Steinbaum's fundraiser idea (eg, publishing a portfolio of Florida women photographers that people could buy by subscription).
2)To compile a list of Florida galleries together with a report on how each is doing representing women artists, and also to let them know about TFAP.
3)To compile a calendar of shows featuring women artists in the upcoming year. Here are some listings as examples:
Lorna Simpson's work is currently being exhibited at MAM
http://www.miamiartmuseum.org/exhibitions-current-upper.asp See AnExample here.
The Sophie Calle exhibit at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin. See SophieExample. See capsule description of show from Miami New Times: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/Issues/2006-09-28/culture/art2.html
http://www.galerieperrotin.com/actualite.php#Sophie%20Calle
*Lamia also invited all FAP members to her first solo show this month. See LamiaAnnouncements. And she noted that Deluxe Arts gallery is very interested in partnering with FAP. They show a majority of work by women. Here is their calendar of previous and upcoming exhibitions. See DeluxeCalendar.
4)To promote programming related to feminist art
5)To encourage student participation
Lamia needs more feedback from other members of the working group.
Current members are: Denise Delgado, Rosie Gordon-Wallace, Terre Rybovich, Carol Prusa, Marilyn Gottlieb-Roberts, Lynne Gelfman, Billie Lynn and Meredith Beattie, Lamia Endara.
Other Business
1)Funding: TFAP-FL is covered under the umbrella of Rutgers' 501 c3, but Susan Vodicka suggested that we may want to incorporate separately, as it will be easier to get Florida-specific grants that way. All agreed. Gail knows 2 lawyers who might be able to help with this. Renee Cagnina has sent MJ the name of a CPA working with Legal Arts and the Art Center of SF who has set up quite a few 501-C-3s.
2)Grants: The Women's Studies Department at the University of South Florida at Tampa wants TFAP-FL to co-apply for a grant from the Florida Humanities Council for a public program of some sort. Research is underway and Mary Jo is working together with Kim Vaz of USF Women's Studies Department to come up with a joint project, possibly an audio-video series of interviews with key Florida feminist artists.
Mary Jo would like TFAP-FL colleagues to send her names of Florida feminist artists who definitely should be included in such a project.
3)Bernice Steinbaumn suggested, as a fundraiser for TFAP-FL, putting together an electronic/printed portfolio of 10 Florida women photographers, to be curated by an expert on photography and sold by subscription. E-mail ideas (theme ideas, names of potential photographers) to Bernice.
4)Gail asked that attendees email their next actions, projects they'll be concentrating on in the coming weeks.
Meeting was ajourned at 3:30.
Attendees took a tour of Francie's splendid collection of photography and ceramics.
