This space is for commentary especially by the members of the networking and exhibitions working groups, but all TFAP-FL colleagues are warmly encouraged to give feedback.
From MJ 10-19-06: I already sent you all the correspondence with the Consortium people, but I reproduce it here for the record emails with consortium people. I don't think we can move ahead now on this idea until there is a firm location for the Consortium conference for 2008 and that apparently will not be known until February of 2007 at the conference then. I still would like to have a discussion here about the three things I outline below as my chief concerns. Please add your thoughts about this, your questions, anything at all.
1) I favor a curated as opposed to juried show. We could have a curatorial committee or one curator...this needs discussion.
2) We need a curator (or committee) who knows the work of Florida women artists, and is well-versed in contemporary feminist art criticism, theory and history.
3) We need to have a strong partnership with the gallery or museum staff at whichever university ends up being the one selected for next year's consortium conference (or the following year, if the timeframe is too short)
4) Deciding whether to do the show at all should be contingent on how amenable the university's art and art history dept is to backing such a show, and how eager the museum or gallery of the university is to do the show, as well as whether it fits into their exhibition schedule.
Ideas????
(this is Jillian, I keep having problems logging in): I think this is a great idea. I like the idea of a curatorial committee that would cover all of the state as opposed to a single curator that might only be familiar with women artists in a certain FL region. I would totally love to be involved. I have very close relationships with a diverse group of women artists in Miami, many of whom engage in feminist artistic practice. I can also contribute my extensive knowledge of contemporary art and feminist art criticsm.
