Content/How addresses feminism & artThis regular course, often offered with a graduate linked seminar on contemporary feminist art theory, addresses the history of women's art in the U.S., from the colonial period to the present, with a somewhat greater emphasis upon late-20th- and 21st-century contributions. Issues addressed in lectures and readings include canonicity, romantic concepts of "genius" and their impact upon women, women artists' access to gallery and museum representation, their self-representations in art and autobiography, and the representations of women artists in art historical texts. Students are also exposed to the varieties of feminist critical positions on the arts, including liberal feminism, radical feminism, and materialist feminism, as well as positions emerging specifically from African-American, Chicana, and Asian-American feminist communities.

Content/How addresses feminism & art Professor Gottlieb Roberts reports: “The Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College, where I teach, has a relatively small art department; our art historical offerings are so far limited to the basic two-semester art history surveys and to art appreciation classes taught primarily by adjunct faculty. Areas relevant to TFAP-FL concerns are informally shared by many of us, but not yet formally integrated into the departmental goals or objectives.”
